Meditation in schools is no longer a new concept. With the benefits of meditation widely acknowledged by educators, the art has been incorporated in educational institutions and students have a session of meditation on a daily basis. Education and the learning process is a hefty event that involves working the brain. As a result, often the brain will tire and reduce its receptive capability. helps students in their social life by leading to an increased pro-social behaviour, for example being more helpful to others and decreased anti-social behaviour for example anger and disobedience. This benefit can be effectively attributed to the fact that meditation plays a key role in creating peace for the mind and therefore does away with any negative energy. Improving greatly academic skills and social skills.
Meditation for students, is applied today in a number of countries worldwide.
In my recent visit to Chile I saw children from the age of four having this practice, the same practice used on regular basis in India, Australia, the US, the UK, Taiwan, and Canada, showed that meditation is beneficial in most cases and was responsible for a three broad outcome for students; better social skills, higher academic skills across all academic subjects, and better and increased well-being.
The benefits of meditation for students are therefore not only limited to the student’s academic performance, but takes a holistic dimension. For students who participated in meditation sessions at school, they reported more positive emotions, higher optimism, stronger self-identity, greater self-acceptance, and were more observant of their health well being and they experienced reduced depression, anxiety, and stress.
The research findings also showed that meditation for students helps in their social life by leading to an increased pro-social behaviour, for example being more helpful to others and decreased anti-social behaviour for example anger and disobedience. This benefit can be effectively attributed to the fact that meditation plays a key role in creating peace for the mind and therefore does away with any negative energy.
With respect to academic performance, meditation was found to improve a host of academic and learning skills in students. This was through a number of parameters including greater and better focus, faster and relevant information processing, more effective working memory, and a more creative and cognitive flexibility. For the young brain, these have been highly useful attributes for growth of the brain, increased reception of new materials and long-term retention of new information.
Meditation benefits for students are therefore not limited to academic performance, but also behaviourally. To this respect, statistically meditation was found to contribute to 50% in reduction of suspensions, 65% reduction in truancy, and in academics, meditation was showed to contribute to 5% increase in the overall grade point average. So, is your school as a teacher, or your child as a parent or guardian attending a school were meditation is practised, if not, then better consider this seriously.
